Strong Assistance | Exporting Electronic Appliances to Mexico for NOM Certification

NOM certification (Norma Oficial Mexicana) is Mexico's mandatory product certification, ensuring compliance with safety, health, energy efficiency, and regulatory requirements, serving as a prerequisite for entering the Mexican market.

Legal and Localization Requirements

Certification Holder Qualification: The holder of the NOM certificate must be a Mexican entity, such as a local company, importer, or authorized agent. Foreign manufacturers must apply for certification through a local agent or by registering a subsidiary in Mexico

Language and Identification: All technical documents, manuals, and labels must be in Spanish and include the NOM mark, certification number, importer information, and country of origin

Certificate validity period: Generally 1 year, which may be extended to 3 years if the certification includes quality system inspection, requiring annual or periodic renewal

Applicable Products

·Mandatory certification: Products powered by electricity, propane, natural gas, or batteries, electronic and electrical products with voltages exceeding 24 volts, as well as home appliances and information technology equipment.

Voluntary Certification: Components such as conductors, fuses, lamp holders, and ballasts can serve as reference certifications

·Latest Standard Examples: LED lamps must comply with NOM-035-ENER standards, while smartwatches must meet NOM-001-SCFI (electrical safety), NOM-016-SCFI (electromagnetic compatibility), NOM-208-SCFI (radio frequency radiation), and other requirements

certification process

1. Determine applicable standards: Refer to the NOM Directory published by CONACYT or consult a certification body for standard interpretation

2. Select a certification body: Prioritize Mexican-accredited laboratories or internationally recognized laboratories with ILAC mutual recognition

3. Submit the application: provide technical documents, product samples, and information on the local holder.

4. Product Testing: Conduct safety, energy efficiency, and electromagnetic compatibility tests in the laboratory.

5. Factory Audit (if applicable): Inspection of the production process and quality system.

6. Certification: Issue the NOM certificate upon confirmation that the product meets the standards.

7. Product Identification: Mark the NOM logo and certification information on the product and packaging
